CABO SAN LUCAS - ONE WEEK LATER

Cabo is digging out but it's not easy. Looters took all the shovels from Costco and Walmart.

Sept. 23, Cabo – One Week After Odile
The Cabo cleanup is under full swing but handicapped by a lack of power because as of this date CFE the federal electric commission is overwhelmed to say the least with having to rebuild the power grid. Virtually every power pole in Los Cabos was blown down. Over 3,000 in the state was the last figure reported. 90% of power in La Paz has been restored and only 19% in Cabo.

Another big problem is the lack of building materials. Millions of square feet of resort, commercial, residential and even auto glass was blown out.  I suspect there isn’t that much glass on-hand in the state of Baja Sur or maybe even all of Mexico at the moment to fill the need.  It will take weeks to get the materials needed from cement to plasterboard, paint, lighting fixtures, furniture and more for Cabo to be ready for visitors again.
The material will need to be ferried over on the daily ferrys from La Paz or Topolobampo that are currently being used to bring emergency food and other supplies. The alternative is to bring it down from Tijuana approximately 900 miles north by truck – a 17 hour journey when the 2-lane highway is fully functioning.  Are you getting my drift?
From the Seattle Times blog 9/23:
“Some major resorts in Los Cabos, slammed by Hurricane Odile, won’t reopen until at least the end of October.  That’s prompting airlines, including Alaska Airlines a major carrier from Seattle and California to the Mexican resort, to extend no-penalty change fees.
Among the major resorts in Los Cabos that are closed at least until Oct. 31 because of hurricane damage are the Sheraton Hacienda Del Mar and Westin Resort and Spa Los Cabos, according to Travel Weekly. The Hyatt Place Los Cabos and Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos won’t be accepting reservations for a month, said the industry publication.”
Let’s hope they are right in their predictions and the resorts do open again October 31. There’s a lot of work to be done and I am sure a lot of unemployed taxi drivers and time-share salesmen willing and able to help. No?

I recall reading that after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire – federal troops ordered idle men at gun point into work gangs to help clean up the streets that were filled with brick rubble from collapsed buildings. Hmmmm. Life was less complicated back then.

Be safe and don't worry the good times will be back and we hope soon.

1906 - One of America's worst disasters

Sympathetic Americans from around the nation sent trainloads of donated emergency supplies to SF in the aftermath of the 1906 disaster. Unfortunately, there's isn't a train in the Baja Peninsula. Cabo is surrounded by water on 3 sides and 900 miles of desert on the 4th. It's almost an island. The 2 lane highway that runs down the peninsula is awash in numerous places along with broken bridges. But it's passable..
