Are you desperate for a root canal but waiting for Obama Care? Don't hold your breath because the new plan does not make dental care any more affordable. And the press has been silent about this.
Here's the reality: It's business as usual for America's dentists and a root canal will still cost the price of a plane ticket to London.
Here's what you get with the new Obama 'No' Dental Care plan:
Millions of dollars in oral hygiene education, fluoridation and federal subsidies for dental schools. So what! Millions of uninsured AND insured Americans will still be unable to afford expensive dental treatments such as root canals, crowns, veneers, implants, cosmetic dental makeovers etc.
Most American insurance plans will pay for one root canal or crown a year. What if you are 55 years old and need 10 or 20 crowns? Do you have to wait 20 years for the insurance company to pay at the rate of one crown per year as the policy allows? Crowns and root canals run $350-550usd in Mexico versus $800-3,000 (at fancy clinics) in the US.
Americans and Canadians who need an entire new set of crowns including some root canals, and an implant or two, can spend upwards of $50-$75,000 on a cosmetic dental makeover. With a dentist in Cabo or Tijuana the cost is around $15-20,000 with the dentist ordering the same materials from the same catalogs American dentists order from.
Patients visit Cabo Mexico dentists to save on crowns and have a great vacation at the same time…
Mexican dental clinics have seen a surge in big treatment patients since the economic crisis began as prices for dental care in Mexico are substantially less than in the USA. ”We are seeing patients who just have their implant bases put in and cannot afford the crowns to complete their treatments by their American dentist back home,” says Cabo Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Guillermo Limon. “Now, they come to Cabo to complete the work and lay on the beach between appointments.”
Unaffordable American dentists are closing clinics…
The Board Certified Mexico Dentist Association membership has grown with more certified dentists in Puerto Vallarta, Cancun and Tijuana and while adding 2 member clinics in Cabo to handle the increased demand this past year. They are doing this while American dentists are closing clinics for lack of patients as American patients cut back on expenses and employers on benefits.
Many Mexican dentists and tourism industry executives are seeing dental tourism as a new facet of Mexico’s tourism industry. Antonio Duran, marketing manager for the Tesoro Resort on the Cabo San Luca marina says his resort is trying to find more niche markets like dental tourists. “We especially appreciate medical and dental tourists as they stay in our hotel 1 to 2 weeks versus only 3.5 days for the average tourist.”
People spend more on dentistry than any other type of healthcare according to the US Dept. of Health and Human Services. But, who needs a healthcare insurance plan that does not cover what most people need most often, and at an affordable price?
Smile, you’re going to see your new dentist in Cabo Mexico. You'll need your passport, swimsuit and sun bloc. But not any health care plan docs.
Author's Tip: You've probably heard from your dentist back home scary stories about dental tourism - they're all true! Because people have a tendency to shop back home for the best "deals." Patients should stop shopping for dentists when they cross the border and insist on a Board Certified Dentist Association dentist instead. They'll get the same quality dental work as back home but at affordable prices.
Those great 'deals' lowest price shoppers find are often un-certified general dentists and usually the cause of patients having to have their work redone by certified dentists back home or in Mexico. Ironically in Mexico - board certified dentists cost no more than general dentists in Mexico. But they are less than 1% of the dentists, so visit one of the sites below that features fully accredited dentists you can be sure of.
