Many are wondering if Ian McShane’s character in the upcoming Game of Thrones Season 6 is the one who’ll bring back Jon Snow from the dead. In a previous interview with Pop Goes the News at the Los Cabos International Film Festival, the British actor claimed that he’d resurrect someone viewers thought they’d never see again.
The Deadwood actor’s role in the HBO show is only for a single episode. For months, several Game of Thrones Season 6 spoilers have been speculating about Jon Snow’s fate. The Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch was killed by his own men in the Game of Thrones Season 5 finale. Is it possible that Ian’s character will get him out of the grave?
Ian might be referring to another well-loved character. If you haven’t read George R.R. Martin’s novels yet, it’s not too late to turn away from the spoiler that follows.
In the fourth book of the series, A Feast for Crows, Brienne and Podrick went to a religious colony consisting of monks. Their leader, who’s only known as the Elder Brother, tells them that he discovered the body of Sandor Clegane, or more famous as the Hound.
Ian’s recent interview with BBC Breakfast also hinted that he’s the leader of a “peaceful tribe.”
“My character is an ex-warrior who’s become a peacenik. So I have this group of peaceful…it’s like a cult, peaceful tribe … who have brought back … I bring back this beloved character that everyone thinks is dead. So, I’ll leave it at that.”
Jon’s fate is definitely one of the most anticipated highlights of Game of Thrones Season 6. Kit Harington remains determined to shy away from questions surrounding his character’s death. In an interview with Time Out London, he immediately claimed that the scenes he filmed for the upcoming season was for the dead version of Jon.
“Look, I’m not in the show any more. I’m definitely not in the new series. I filmed some scenes of me being dead. It’s some of my best work. I know how long I’m a corpse for, but I can’t tell you that!”
Harington also reminds viewers that while making theories about the show is good, they shouldn’t get their hopes too high as they might end up frustrated.
Reports claim that the opening scene of Game of Thrones Season 6 will reveal what happens next to Jon. Even if he’s dead in the series, hopeful fans can still wait for GRRM’s Winds of Winter. After all, the author revealed to IGN that the novel will have a significant part that won’t be shown in the series.
“I have decided to do it. Will you know it? I don’t know. It is fairly obvious because it is something that involves a couple of characters, one of which is dead on the show, and not dead in the books.”
He added that the show won’t be able to execute such plot development, as showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have already killed a pivotal character. GRRM also claimed that contrary to the popular notion, the showrunners are “bloodier” than him.
Following Harington’s advice to not expect too much, there are about 15 other characters who were killed off from the show. George’s massive plot may not solely be about Jon, for it can also pertain to Robb Stark, Tywin Lannister, or Stannis Baratheon.
Game of Thrones Season 6 premieres on April 24.
